Meet me at the table

4 ft x 2 ft x 2.6 ft, 2022, wooden table, bronze wheels, natural dyes, wool, oak, acrylic

My focus has been on found objects common to the art school environment, specifically the studio furniture that we encounter at the start of each academic year. I am interested in the marks left on the tabletops, which I see as abstract compositions, left as a by-product of creative labour. We can view these overlooked surfaces as art works in themselves; they can be seen as either compulsively ordered or chaotically disordered.

Drawing on this imagery, I work instinctively and translate the marks and colours I find into tapestries, using a process of weaving. The tapestries are left on the looms they are woven on, giving them a sculptural theatrical presence. They are displayed in a way that emphasises both their functionality and their status as aesthetic objects. Protruding from the walls and studio dividers the works battle between an apparently elegant formal presentation and a mischievous display of disregarded objects.
